Certificate and Permit Renewals

Renewal requirements vary depending on the type of Certificate or Permit an applicant holds. The requirements for renewing your specific certificate or permit are listed on the reverse side of the certificate or permit itself.

Renewal Guidelines

Your Renewal Application must be received in this office no later than the expiration date posted on your current certificate or permit. Be sure to send a Complete Application Packet with ALL required documentation, including all applicable transcripts. Incomplete applications will be returned unprocessed. Also be sure to enclose the correct fee for each renewal certificate of permit. Payment can be made by check, cashier’s check, money order or credit card.

Most certificates and permits require five (5) renewal or professional development credits to obtain renewal; however, each applicant must verify individual requirements as stated on his or her certificate (Note: If you have taken PTSB approved workshops to obtain renewal credits, PTSB will already have those credits on file in our office).

Options for Obtaining Renewal Credit

  • College courses from an accredited institution--this includes community colleges in your area
  • PTSB approved workshops—these can include school district workshops, community workshops, or workshops by educational organizations
  • Continuing education (For Nurses, Social Workers, Counselors, & Speech Language Pathologists ONLY. Classroom teachers may NOT use this option.
  • Credits earned while pursuing National Board Certification

Renewing your Certificate or Permit early

PTSB encourages applicants to renew their certificates as early as possible. Renewal applications are accepted up to six (6) months prior to the expiration date of the applicant’s existing certificate or permit. Renewing your certificate or permit early can help you avoid the longer wait times often experienced during the summer months.

Adding an Endorsement when renewing your certificate or permit

If you are adding an endorsement to your certificate at renewal time, please complete the “Add Endorsement” application and submit it along with your Renewal Application.

Adding an Endorsement through an Institutional Recommendation

There will be no additional fee when adding an endorsement at renewal time through an Institutional Recommendation

Adding an Endorsement through a Demonstration of Competency

If you are adding the endorsement through a “Demonstration of Competency,” there will be an additional fee of $100 (please refer to the “Demonstration of Competency” section of the “Add Endorsement” application).
