Virginia Licensure Renewal Manual



Overview

Teachers in Virginia are required to complete 180 professional development points every five years. There are eight renewal options available to teachers.

College Credit
Teachers without a master’s degree – must complete a minimum of 90 points (three semester hours) of coursework in their content area. This may be undergraduate or graduate work through a regionally accredited college or university.
Teachers with a master’s degree – may complete undergraduate or graduate work through a regionally accredited college or university. This work may be in their content area or another area of study.
A total of 180 points may be earned through this option

Professional Conference
Teachers may attend formal meetings, workshops, institutes, or seminars that are at least four hours in length and address professional development skills.
Teachers may earn 5 points per day for attendance and 15 points per presentation at these events.
A total of 45 points may be earned through this option

Curriculum Development
Points in this area may be earned through group activities that improve the curricula of a school, division, or institution.
A total of 90 points may be earned through this option

Publication of an Article
Publications may include a written narrative, article, or report that contributes to the body of knowledge of the education profession.
A total of 90 points (45 points per article) may be earned through this option.

Publication of a Book
Books submitted for licensure renewal contribute to the body of knowledge in the teaching profession or content area, and delineate concepts, theories, or practices in education.
A total of 90 points may be earned through this option.

Mentorship/Supervision
Supervision of field experiences, pre-service teachers, first year teachers, and interns in approved preparation programs are appropriate for credit in this area.
A total of 90 points may be earned through this option.

Educational Project
Appropriate professional development opportunities in this category include participation in a professional exchange program (extended time), alternative work experiences, independent study programs, and teaching a course for a college or university. A written report or other tangible product is required for credit.
A total of 90 points may be earned through this option.

Professional Development Activity
Staff development opportunities that enhance professional performance are appropriate activities in this category. Specific options include sequential, ongoing, and collaborative efforts that advance the goals of a school division or agency.
A total of 180 points may be earned through this option.
