Teacher Professional Development in South Dakota

Individuals who wish to renew a current South Dakota teaching certificate or update a lapsed certificate need the following items:

Renewal applicant

  • Praxis II test scores (optional), and
  • The appropriate fee ($30.00 or $50.00). The department may issue a one-time ten-year certificate to an applicant who has completed advanced degree within the previous five-year period. The certificate shall be issued from the date of the completion of the degree. It may be to the applicant's advantage to apply for the one-time, 10-year certificate using future advanced degree credits.
  • Documentation of credits earned between the issue date of your current certificate and the application for renewal,

Requirements for educators holding a BACHELORS DEGREE:

Six credits related to your area of preparation are required to renew your teaching certificate. Three of these six credits (or five of nine quarter credits) must be recognized on an official college transcript. The three remaining hours may include any of the following types of credit:
  • Credit hours reflected on an official college transcript;
  • Department of Education (DOE) Renewal Credits;
  • Continuing Education Units (15 hours = 1 CEU); or
  • Three of six credits may be granted toward renewal, based on private or public sector experience that was not obtained through academic coursework, if the experience is related to the applicant’s teaching field. The credit may be granted upon department review and upon approval of a completed application form.


*Applicants with continuing Professional Development Plans (PDP) must submit verification of completion of any requirements in excess of six credits as established in the plan. PDPs must be updated to establish remaining requirements for subsequent renewal before the certificate is reissued.

*Applicants renewing a certificate must verify completion of three credits in Human Relations and a three credit course in South Dakota Indian Studies approved by the department.

Requirements for educators holding an ADVANCED DEGREE:

Six credits related to your area of preparation are required to renew your teaching certificate and can include any of the following types of credit:
  • Credit hours reflected on an official college transcript;
  • Department of Education (DOE) Renewal Credits;
  • Continuing Education Units (15 hours = 1 CEU); or
  • Three of six credits may be granted toward renewal, based on private or public sector experience that was not obtained through academic coursework, if the experience is related to the applicant’s teaching field. The credit may be granted upon department review and upon approval of a completed application form located above (pdf).

Applicant with lapsed certificate

  • Official college transcripts verifying completion of six semester hours or nine quarter hours of credit within the five-year period immediately preceding application,
  • Praxis II test scores, and
  • The appropriate fee ($30.00 or $50.00)

Other Applicants
Applicants who do not meet either of the above requirements may be issued a one-year certificate, allowing them time to complete the necessary requirements.
