PROFESSIONAL TEACHER CERTIFICATION
To qualify for a Professional certificate, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
1. Held an Initial Tier I certificate
2. Completion of a teacher preparation program
3. Passing scores on two performance reviews
4. Approved Alaska Studies coursework
5. Approved Multicultural/Cross-Cultural Communications coursework
6. Recency credit (six semester hours of credit in the previous five years)
7. Passing scores on a content area exam
8. If the Praxis II exam was taken for another state, you must meet or exceed Alaska’s passing scores.
9. Fingerprint cards submitted with application for background check
10. Complete application and fees (All fees are non-refundable.)

The Professional certificate is valid for five (5) years and is renewable. To renew a Professional certificate, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
1. Recency credit (six semester hours of credit taken during the life of the Professional certificate being renewed. A minimum of three semester hours must be upper division or graduate credit.)
2. Verification of current employment in an Alaska public school district in a position requiring a certificate. If an applicant is not employed in this capacity at the time of renewal, fingerprint cards will be required.
3. Complete application and fees.

MASTER TEACHER CERTIFICATION
To qualify for a Master certificate, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
1. Meet all requirements for the Professional certificate
2. Hold a current Initial or Professional certificate
3. Hold current National Board certification issued by NBPTS (OR) Scored at advanced level on each of two performance reviews
4. Complete application and fees

The Master certificate is valid for ten (10) years and is renewable. To renew a Master certificate, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

1. Current, renewed National Board certification
2. Recency credit (Six semester hours of credit taken during the life of the Professional certificate being renewed. A minimum of three semester hours must be upper division or graduate credit.)
3. Verification of employment in an Alaska public school district in a position requiring a certificate. If an applicant is not employed in this capacity at the time of renewal, fingerprint cards will be required.
4. Complete application and fees (All fees are non-refundable.)
If the requirements to renew a Master certificate have not been met, an applicant must meet all current renewal requirements for the Professional certificate.

RECENCY CREDIT
Six semester or nine quarter hours of credit earned from a regionally accredited university are required for renewal or reinstatement of a Regular five-year certificate. Credits earned after the effective date of the certificate being renewed count toward recency credit(s). Three semester hours of credit may be continuing education units (CEUs) and/or with prior EED approval, non-academic credit. At least three semester hours must be upper division or graduate level credit.

Professional Development and Certificate Renewals

A TOTAL OF SIX SEMESTER HOURS OF CREDIT ARE REQUIRED FOR RENEWAL OF A REGULAR 5-YEAR CERTIFICATE. UP TO THREE NON- ACADEMIC CREDITS OR CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS MAY BE USED TO RENEW A REGULAR 5-YEAR CERTIFICATE. NON-ACADEMIC CREDITS OR CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS WILL COUNT AS LOWER-DIVISION CREDITS TOWARD THE RENEWAL OF A REGULAR 5-YEAR CERTIFICATE. THREE UPPER DIVISION OR GRADUATE LEVEL CREDITS ARE REQUIRED FOR RENEWAL.

NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT

NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT OR CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS MUST BE RELATED TO THE ENDORSEMENT AREA(S) ON THE CERTIFICATE WHICH IS BEING RENEWED. NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT IS AVAILABLE ONLY FROM THE TEACHER CERTIFICATION OFFICE FOR PRE-APPROVED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES. TRAVEL, INSTITUTES AND WORKSHOPS ARE THE TYPES OF ACTIVITIES THAT MAY QUALIFY FOR NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT.

TRAVEL

A MINIMUM OF THREE WEEKS OF ORGANIZED, SPONSORED EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL ARE REQUIRED FOR EACH NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT. RECREATIONAL TRAVEL WILL NOT QUALIFY TO EARN NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT(S). TRAVEL MUST BE PRE-APPROVED IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT(S). PLEASE REFER TO THE NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT PRE-APPROVAL FORM.

INSTITUTES AND WORKSHOPS

ONE NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT MAY BE AWARDED PER 15 CONTACT HOURS AT A SINGLE INSTITUTE OR WORKSHOP SPONSORED BY AN INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION, A STATE PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION, A NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION, OR AN ALASKA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT. ATTENDANCE MUST BE PRE-APPROVED IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT(S). PLEASE REFER TO THE NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT PRE-APPROVAL FORM.

NOTE: INDIVIDUAL PREPARATORY AND FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES MAY NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE REQUIRED 15-HOUR TIME PERIOD. HOURS FROM VARIOUS EVENTS MAY NOT BE COMBINED TO EQUAL 15 CONTACT HOURS. NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT MUST BE RELATED TO THE ENDORSEMENT AREA(S) ON THE CERTIFICATE WHICH IS BEING RENEWED.

THE COST OF EACH NON-ACADEMIC CREDIT APPLIED TOWARD RENEWAL IS $50.00.


CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS

ONE CONTINUING EDUCATION UNIT MAY BE AWARDED FOR A MINIMUM OF 15 CONTACT HOURS AT A SINGLE ACTIVITY SPONSORED BY:

1. A REGIONALLY ACCREDITED INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION, OR

REPRESENTS THE FIELD.

3. AN ALASKA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT

A PHOTOCOPY OF THE CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE MUST BE SUBMITTED AS DOCUMENTATION OF THE HOURS. IF CONTACT HOURS ARE NOT INDICATED ON THE CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE, THE AGENDA MUST ALSO BE SUBMITTED, WITH ALL ATTENDANCE CLEARLY MARKED. IF THE UNIVERSITY, NATIONAL OR STATE ORGANIZATION THAT REPRESENTS THE FIELD, OR ALASKA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT IS NOT LISTED ON THE CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE, ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION FROM THE SPONSOR OF THE ACTIVITY MAY BE REQUESTED BY THE TEACHER CERTIFICATION OFFICE.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS DO NOT NEED PRE-APPROVAL FROM THE TEACHER CERTIFICATION OFFICE. THE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL OF THE REGULAR 5-YEAR CERTIFICATE.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS MUST BE RELATED TO THE ENDORSEMENT AREA(S) ON THE CERTIFICATE WHICH IS BEING RENEWED.

THE COST OF EACH CONTINUING EDUCATION UNIT APPLIED TOWARD RENEWAL IS $50.00.

THE FOLLOWING LIST OF NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS APPROVED FOR GRANTING CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS. ANY CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION SUBMITTED FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS MUST BE ASSOCIATED WITH ONE OF THE NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS LISTED BELOW.
